 MAFS.8.EE.1.1: Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions.

MAFS.8.EE.1.3: Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria
 • determine the properties of integer exponents by exploring patterns and applying my understanding of properties of whole number exponents. • explain what it means for a number to be raised to a power and how to represent the repeated multiplication symbolically. • explain when parentheses are required for bases when generating equivalent expressions. • apply the properties of integer exponents to simplify expressions.  • write very large and very small numbers in scientific notation.

compare numbers written in scientific notation to determine how many times larger or smaller one number written in scientific notation is than another.

(1 hour) Exit Ticket –  Exponent Rules Practice (20 min) Early Finishers – IXL: F.13 Wednesday: Bellringer: Number Sense Problem 16 (5 min) Whole Group: Discuss properties of exponents and how to apply them to complete the small group activity. (6 min) Small Group: Knockout Game focusing on applying properties of exponents. (30 min) Thursday: Bellringer: Number Sense Problem 17 (5 min) Whole Group: ISN – Introduction to Scientific Notation (30 min) Small Group: Three rotations at 20 minutes each. (1 hour) Rotation 1 – Teacher Group (Ready Math Book) – Pages 31,34,35 Rotation 2 – Partners (Worksheet)/Intervention Teacher –  Scientific Notation Practice Mathaids Rotation 3 – Independent (Technology) – IXL: G.1, IReady Exit Ticket –  Convert Standard Form into Scientific Notation (6 min) Lunch All IEP and ESOL accommodations provided daily.
