TeacherJamie Newcomb
Subject AreaComprehensive Science III
Grade Level8
Week #21
Unit of InstructionMatter Cycles - Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
Standard(s) Taught

SC.8.L.18.1  Describe and investigate the process of photosynthesis, such as the roles of light, carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll; production of food; release of oxygen.

SC.8.N.1.6  Understand that scientific investigations involve the collection of relevant empirical evidence, the use of logical reasoning, and the application of imagination in devising hypotheses, predictions, explanations and models to make sense of the collected evidence.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will:

• describe the process of photosynthesis using word equations:

carbon dioxide + water +  sunlight —> sugar (food) + oxygen + water
• describe the role of light, carbon dioxide and water in photosynthesis
• describe the role of chlorophyll in the process of photosynthesis
• differentiate which organisms undergo photosynthesis

NOS Focus-  Making predictions and using evidence to draw conclusions

Classroom Activities
Assignments Due

Photosynthesis Song or Poem Formative assignment directions:

(Due 1/23/2020 for periods 2-4; due 1/28/2020 for periods 6-8)

  • Get in groups of 2 – 3 students.
  • Write out a song or poem on page 76 in your notebook that describes the process of photosynthesis (every student should have a written copy of the final product)
  • The song or poem may be performed for extra credit
  • Include in the poem or song the following things:
    • What part of the plant photosynthesis takes place in
    • The cell organelle that photosynthesis happens in
    • The role of chlorophyll
    • The reactants of photosynthesis
    • The products of photosynthesis

Photosynthesis Project Directions:

(Due 1/29/2020 for periods 2-4; due 1/31/2020 for periods 6-8)

This project is to demonstrate your understanding of the process of photosynthesis. This is an independent project in which you will create a model, drawing, comic book, video, storybook or short written skit that describes the process of photosynthesis (what happens in the cells of a plant’s leaves to create glucose from carbon dioxide and water).

Another type of project can be chosen, but it must be cleared by the teacher first.

No power point presentations are acceptable.

No matter what form your project takes it should meet the following requirements:

  1. Provide some type of visual display of the parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, flower) and of the way the reactants and products move in and out of a leaf and/or plant cell.
  2. Explain the roles of the parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, flower).
  3. Explain the roles of the chloroplast, chlorophyll, sunlight, vacuole and stomata in photosynthesis
  4. Describe the reactants, products and equation of photosynthesis (water, carbon dioxide, glucose, oxygen). The equation for photosynthesis should be displayed/written out somewhere in your project.

**Each part is worth 20 points for a total of 80 points.

This project will be a summative grade for the 3rd nine weeks.
