Use similar triangles to explain why the slope m is the same between two distinct points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y = mx for a line through the origin and the equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at b.

MAFS.8.F.1.3

Interpret the equation y = mx + b as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of functions that are not linear.

MAFS.8.F.2.4

Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities.  Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph.  Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values.

• create right triangles to drawing a horizontal line segment and a vertical line segment from any two points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane.
• justify that an equation in the form of y = mx will represent the graph of a proportional relationship with a slope of m and y-intercept of 0.
• justify that an equation in the form of y = mx + b will represent the graph of a linear relationship with a slope of m and a y-intercept of b.
• explain slope as a constant rate of change. (change in y over change in x as a fraction)
• identify a linear function as y = mx + b.
• identify linear functions as having graphs that are straight lines.
• identify functions that are not linear from equations, tables, and graphs.
• describe the features of a graph (increasing/ decreasing, linear/  non-linear, or constant).
• identify the type of function given a graph.
