Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will sing using their singing voices.

Students will read the Treble clef while playing the recorder.

Students will learn a song on the xylophones by first performing body percussion, adding words, then finally playing the notes with their mallets. 

Students will perform their winter performance pieces memorized with the proper movements.

Students will sing in parts. 

Classroom Activities

Recorder Unit

  • Review Hot Cross Buns, Gently Sleep, Merrily We Roll Along
  • Introduce/Review It’s Raining and Old MacDonald
  • Introduce When the Saints Go Marching In (high C and high D) 
  • Recorder Centers if/when classes have at least 3 stickers on their memorization chart for winter performance pieces 


Go over and practice performing winter performance pieces

  • Bring on the Snow
  • Hot Chocolate
  • Over the River
  • Ready, Set, Snow
  • Blizzard on the Way
  • Angels in the Snow 

Practice harmonies and separate parts. 


  • Go over/review how to properly play the xylophone
  • “Taco Song” – body percussion first, transfer to instruments 
  • Split into parts with various instruments 
  • C Scale Explorations (Mallet Madness pg 56) – what is a scale? 

– Different rhythm patterns (Ta and Ti Ti) 

– Excerpt from the Sound of Music to go over scale (solfege) 

– Echo rhythms, rolling notes with the mallets, playing in a round

If more time is needed, music game
