Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will listen to and understand various African American spirituals.
Students will learn about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
Students will learn and be able to identify a Call and Response song.
Students will play on xylophones and recorders with proper playing technique.
Students will begin learning and memorizing their Spring Performance pieces.
Students will read and identify notes on the Treble Clef.

Students will sing using their proper singing voices (appropriate tone, dynamics, etc.)

Continue working on “It’s Raining” (3rd grade)
Begin “Old MacDonald” (3rd-5th)
– Introduce low D on recorder
If class is ready, begin “Oh When the Saints Go Marching In”

Continue Follow the Drinking Gourd
Songs with a hidden message
Discuss Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad
Sing through song and read background information in music book
Watch video of the Drinking Gourd story (if class has not) 
Add xylophone accompaniment to the song – keeping steady beat, reading treble clef notes, playing with proper playing technique

Review Wade in the Water
Discuss Harriet Tubman – read mini biography and look at pictures
“Is this song have a hidden message?”
Call and Response song

Introduce “Gonna Ride Up in a Chariot”
