Students will sing using their singing voices. 

Students will come up with their own movements to describe what they hear in a piece of music. 

Students will solo sing, answering questions, matching pitch. 

Student will learn new songs from different cultures (Austria, Africa, South America) 

Students will listen to different stories that go along with their new songs to help them better understand the culture (Abiyoyo, Kibungo)

Vocal Warm-Up : Hello There, Solfege

Beat Buddy Warm-Up : finding and maintaining a steady beat

Magic Mallet

  • Students will be asked a question by Echo the Parrot
  • If they are holding the Magic Mallet, they get to respond to the question in song, showing they can match pitch
  • Solo singing, pitch and vocal assessment

Austrian Yodel Song

  • Go over lyrics and motions, talk about Austria and the different things you can find there (mountains, lakes, etc.) 
  • Show powerpoint with pictures
  • Watch Austrian Goat Herd (The Sound of Music)

It’s a Small World

  • Discuss different cultures 
  • Has anyone heard this song before? 
  • Teach lyrics and movements 

Mirror Exercise

  • Put students into pairs
  • Have students come up with their own movements to go along with a piece of music that is playing
  • Students can show what they hear (high sounds, low sounds, fast, slow) or movements that go along with the music
  • Their partner “mirrors” them 
  • Listening assessment 


  • Talk about Africa and folk stories
  • Listen to the Abiyoyo story and watch the video 
  • Sing the Abiyoyo song
  • Teach simple xylophone accompaniment  


  • Talk about the Amazon Rain Forest: what could you find there? 
  • Listen to the story of Kibungo
  • Sing the song that goes along with the story
  • What instruments to you hear? 
  • Talk about differences and similarities to Kibungo compared to Abiyoyo
