Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will perform on their recorders either Merrily We Roll Along or Old MacDonald for a playing test. 

Students will begin learning their Spring Performance pieces.

Students will demonstrate proper recorder playing posture, sound, and musical technique. 

Students will complete a Reading Treble Clef worksheet packet where they will read various patterns of music in treble clef and answer questions about different musical styles.

Students will learn about the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion families and will learn to tell the difference between each of the instruments/families. 

Students will demonstrate their instrument family knowledge by playing in a listening game.

Classroom Activities

Recorder Playing Test:

  • Students will be called one at a time and play either Merrily We Roll Along (3rd) or Old MacDonald (4th, 5th)
  • They will be graded on posture, sound, and accuracy. 

Treble Clef Worksheet Packet

  • While recorder test is going on, students will be completing a treble clef worksheet packet and turning it in for a completion grade. 

Instrument Families

  • String Family 
  • Woodwind Family
  • Brass Family
  • Percussion Family
    • Students will watch a powerpoint on each instrument family
    • The powerpoint also has video demonstrations of each instrument played by professionals
    • Ms. Holvey will also bring in some instruments to demonstrate

Instrument Family Four Corners

  • After completing the instrument family powerpoints, students will be assessed on their instrument knowledge by playing instrument family four corners. An instrument will be played and students will have to go to the corner labeled the name of the instrument they think is playing

Spring Performance Pieces

  • Students will begin learning their Spring Performance pieces

  4. Rocking Robin (Recorder Piece)
  5. Dancing Queen

  7. It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got that Sing, Sing, Sing!
