Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

• Today I will learn about RENÉ MAGRITTE, so that I CAN talk about his artwork and learn about SURREALISM.
• Today I will learn about LINE and SHAPE, so that I CAN follow directions drawing an APPLE. I’ll know I have it when it is large and filled with a PATTERN. 
• Today I will learn about COLOR, so that I CAN use a COMPLEMENTARY color for my background that makes my apple pop.

Classroom Activities

Students will learn about surrealism and artist, Rene’ Magritte.  We will watch and discuss a read aloud, “Magritte’s Marvelous Hat.” They will then draw an apple and choose a pattern to draw inside of it. Next students will paint the patterns, cut out the apple, and glue it to a complimentary color background paper. They can add decorative elements to their artwork. Finally, artwork will be uploaded to Artsonia.
