Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

• Students will learn to employ a basic metalworking technique by embossing lines and textures into a soft metal • Students will apply design elements including line, pattern, texture, and color while considering their relationship to a 3-dimensional surface • Students will learn some facts about Thailand and the significance of the elephant in their culture

Classroom Activities

Students will watch a video containing some fun facts about Thailand and watch a video of Thailand’s Royal Elephants. We will discuss embossing and metal tooling and they will view a powerpoint slide illustrating examples of Thai Elephants in artwork and Metal Embossed artwork. Students will have an 8×11 paper and frame it with a ruler. They will have some visuals for inspiration to create a pattern in the frame and color using sharpie markers and oil pastels. Students will then plan their elephant and trace their drawing onto thin metal sheets and emboss their design. After, they will color in some of the designs they created on their elephant with sharpie markers and glue the elephant to the background they created. They will then publish this on Artsonia along with an artist statement.
