Students will:

  • Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology . . . problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts
  • Apply grade 5 Reading standards to informational texts
  • Use context as a clue to the meaning of word or phrase
  • Identify and explain significant events leading up to the American Revolution
  • Identify significant individuals and groups who played a role in the American Revolution.
  • Examine and compare major battles and military campaigns of the American Revolution.
Classroom Activities

Whole Group:

Comparing & Contrasting Text Structures – Chronological Order, Problem & Solution, Cause & Effect, Problem & Solution with unit study passages and questions 

American Revolution – Review major causes of the Revolution

King’s M&M’s Simulation – Students will participate in simulation to deepen understanding of patriots feelings that lead to the beginning of the Revolution then use that knowledge to write a short response taking on the role of a British colonist to tell whether they support the movement for a separation from Britain or to remain loyal to the King. 

Liberty’s Kids – Episode 3 – United We Stand 

Writing – Developing Elaboration. Students will work to develop elaboration in their writing using song lyrics to understand the process and as a frame of how to apply to their own writing.
