Subject AreaMath/Science/Social Studies
Grade Level4
Week #17
Unit of InstructionMeasurement Conversions/Energy in Motion/Saint Augustine: French vs. Spanish
Standard(s) Taught

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; L, mL; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), …

Investigate and describe that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change.

Describe how moving water and air are sources of energy and can be used to move things.

Social Studies

Identify nations (Spain, France, England) that controlled Florida before it became a United States territory.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will be able to:

Explain that a digit in one place is worth ten times the value of the place to its right by connecting to measurement conversions within the metric system.

Use operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, and money intervals of time using linear models.

Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.

Students will be able to:

Investigate and describe how energy can cause motion (e.g., moving water can turn a water wheel to make hydropower, wind can move sand across the beach or sail a model boat, solar energy can power a model car).

Investigate and describe how energy can create change in matter (e.g., heat energy can melt ice, moving water can make rocks smooth, light can keep food warm).

Explain the relationship between energy and motion.

Social Studies

Students will be able to:

summarize Florida’s early history before it became a territory of the United States

list the nations that controlled Florida during this period

summarize St. Augustine’s significance in Florida history and United States history
