Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

For writing we will be focusing on the following this week:

  • use organizational/formatting structures (graphic organizers) to develop their writing ideas.
  • compose a clear and logical piece of writing that demonstrates their understanding of a specific writing style.
  • recognize that a well-developed piece of writing requires more than one draft.
  • edit their writing by checking for errors in capitalization, punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc.
  • prepare multiple drafts using revisions and edits to develop and strengthen their writing.
Classroom Activities

FSA Writing Preparation:

*Students will plan and write an opinion essay in response to the following prompt: Some schools are deciding not to have spring break in favor of ending the school year early for summer break. Which do you think is better: have a week off for spring break or skip spring break and begin summer break earlier?

*Students will practice skills that are essential to writing effective essays.  These skills include: writing hooks, properly utilizing transitions/linking words, providing evidence to support their ideas, citing evidence from pieces of text, writing strong conclusions, and editing their work.

*PowerPoint presentation and class discussion of an FSA Writing Guide.

*Practice FSA Writing Prompt: Mandatory Uniforms? (Opinion Essay)

*Practice FSA Writing Prompt: Second Languages in School (Opinion Essay)

*Practice FSA Writing Prompt: Natural Disasters (Informative Essay)

*Wednesday: Writing Rotations

*No spelling test this week.*

*All essays will be completed in class as preparation for the FSA Writing.  This test is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2nd.
