Subject AreaMath/Science/S. Studies
Grade Level4th
Week #Week #9 (October 9th-13th)
Unit of InstructionArea and Perimeter and Fractions/Space Science/US Constitution
Standard(s) Taught

Math:

MAFS.4.MD.1.3

Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.

MAFS.4.NF.2.3

Understand a fraction  with a > 1 as a sum of fractions

a.    Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.

Science: SC.4.E.5.5, SC.4.E.6.4

Investigate and report the effects of space research and exploration on the economy and culture of Florida.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Math:

1.      Apply the area formula (A = l × w) in real world and mathematical situations.

2.      Solve for missing dimensions of rectangles when provided with the perimeter and/or area.

3.      Solve problems involving area of a composite figure composed of rectangles.

  1. Apply the perimeter formula (P = 2l + 2w) in real world and mathematical situations.
  2. Demonstrate with concrete and visual models (i.e., number lines, rectangles, squares, and circles) that adding fractions referring to the same sized whole is joining parts of the whole.
  3. Demonstrate with concrete and visual models that subtracting fractions referring to the same sized whole is separating parts of the whole.

Science:

  1. Read and discuss how the effects of space research and exploration has created advances in science that have impacted the economy and culture of Florida (e.g., medical technology, transportation, agriculture, and industrial productivity).
  2. Research products that were generated specifically for space but have now found purpose for public use (e.g., freeze-dried food, memory foam, mylar blanket).
