Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will:

-Read various poems and explain major differences between them by citing references to  structural elements of poems (e.g. verse, rhythm, meter).

-Describe how figurative language helps provide imagery for a poem.

-Write several journal entries on various topics.

-Compose poetry of their own to perform at the Poetry Cafe OR successfully find a poem they like and practice reading it aloud.

-Compose an essay of literary analysis in a given time period.

-Analyze specific elements of the poem “Dust of Snow.”

Classroom Activities

-Poetry writing/speaking (students will be planning how they will perform their poems).

-Class discussion of poem “Winter Morning”: lines, stanzas, figurative language, mood, theme

-Students will individually analyze the poem “Dust of Snow” and answer questions.

-Haiku reading and discussion from Literature Book

.Parents: please come to see our Poetry Cafe on Wednesday, Dec. 20th. in the theater.  Manning homeroom will perform their poems beginning at 8:15. Mr. Lee’s homeroom will perform their poems at 11:15. You are invited to join us for refreshments afterward in our classrooms.

Winter Dance/Music Showcase for my homeroom is Monday, December 18th at 6:45 pm.
