Syllabus – Dance Tech I, II, III, Semester 1


Dance Technique – 1st Semester 2019

Course Description:
Welcome to Middle School Dance! This semester dancers can expect to develop a deep foundation of dance knowledge. We will work on technique, build more advanced skills and explore with stylized movements and genres. Be prepared to work hard and grow in your potential!

Required Materials:
To successfully complete this course, you will need:
• A 3-pronged folder or binder
• 100 index cards
• Please stock your folder/binder with notebook paper in the prongs
• Pen or Pencil

Optional, but Highly Recommended Items:
• Tan split sole jazz shoes (capezio E-series slip on jazz shoe in caramel)
• Tan (caramel) full footed, stirrup, or convertible tights (capezio ultra soft transition tights in caramel)
• Solid black leotard, preferably tank style: (Theatricals scoop neck tank in black)
• Black dance shorts: (any kind that is cotton or lycra/spandex, with at least a 2.5” inseam)
• Black dance leggings
• Boys: Black or white solid tshirt, black jazz pants or black sweatpants, black socks, and black slip on jazz shoes (not lace up)

*All dancewear items can be bought/ordered through the school store, PrimaDance,, or Raise the Barre Dance Boutique. Please have materials in class no later than the first week of September.

Grading Policy:
Students will be graded on:
• Class Participation/Effort – Daily Grade
• Quizzes
• Dance Performances – Self assessment
• Independent Research Assignments
• Group Projects
• Peer Assessments
• Skill Assessments

• Dancers will have respect for teacher and fellow dancers
• Dancers will be focused and positive in class
• The following will NOT be tolerated:
o Gum Chewing
o Disrespect
o Improper dance attire
o Bad Attitude
o Bullying

This is a performing arts class, and dancers are expected to participate in multiple school performances as a part of their grade. We may perform in the school’s Veteran’s Day Performance in addition to our annual “Nutcracker with a Twist” and Spring Showcase. Dancers will need dance attire mentioned above to wear for the performances. More information will go home as we get closer to performance time!
