Big Idea: Organizational Structure: Enduring Understanding 3: Every art form uses it’s own unique language, verbal and non-verbal, to document and communicate to the world. TH.68.O.3.2: Explore how theater and theatrical works have influenced various cultures. 

Big Idea: Historical and Global Connections: Enduring Understanding 1: Through study in the arts, we learn about and honor others and the worlds in which they live(d). TH. 68. H.1.4: Create a monologue or story that reflects one’s understanding of an event in a culture different from one’s own. 

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Monday/Tuesday: To Introduce Theater history to the beginning Theater student; To Gain an appreciation for the history of theater; To apply the lessons of history to the theater of today; AND To work together in a group.

Wednesday/Thursday: To introduce the 10 rules of improvisation and To work together in an improvisation format. To be comfortable with thinking on their feet.

Fridays: To create a scene or monologue using Fine Art and To edit and refine scene or monologue using critiques of classmates.

Classroom Activities

Tuesday, January 22    Improvisation extra day.

Activities:

  1. Scare off the Bench: One student “owns” the bench. The next student tries using pantomime to scare the owner off the bench. Student may not touch the other student and may not use violence to remove the original student. Also idea must be in pantomime.
  2. Catch Phrase: This improvisation game is played with three people. Two of the people have Catch Phrases, two lines of dialogue each (one question and one statement) that are collected from the audience. During the scene those catch phrases are the only thing they can say. They may change to inflection or add different punctuation, but may not change the words or order of the words. The third person must play the scene like normal and help bring it to a conclusion

  3. Famous Last Words: students get an idea from the audience and the team must come up with the famous last words of that Person, place or thing. For example: Famous Last words of Instagram might be “Facebook!”

    Wednesday, January 23

Theater Definition of the day: Vocabulary Challenge: Students will be given a popular phrase or saying of the theater. They must find out the background of that saying OR creatively make up their own version behind the meaning of the saying. Third Challenge: Theater superstition: Whistling in the theater is bad luck! Why? Where does this come from?

Journal Entry: “Improvisation is easy” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?

Activities: Choosing a group of 3-4 people, Plan a scene using the improvisation rule: Tell a Story! Make sure you have a clear beginning, middle and ending. Critique: Was there a clear plot? What was good about the scenes? What needed improvement?

Theater Definition of the day: Vocabulary Challenge: Whistling in the theater answer.

Journal Entry: Edit and revise one written monologue or scene based on art.

Theater Definition of the day: Vocabulary Challenge: Why is wearing blue on stage considered Bad Luck in the theater? Where does this come from in theater history? 

Activities: View video on overview of theater history; Theatre History Project #2–Scenes from history. Assign scenes from theatre history to small groups. Work on Scenes.

Provide answers to vocabulary challenge/theater superstitions. Wearing blue

Improvisation Day!

Thursday, January 31 and Friday, February 1

Journal Entry: Using the piece of art displayed on the white board, write a scene or monologue using the characters in the painting. It must have a beginning, middle and an end. We will be sharing these journal entries.

Activity: Starting with the journal entries, students will join a group and will edit, refine, and add to the monologues and scenes written; Groups that are interested will share their theatrical piece; Critique of each piece shared; If times allows we will pick a new art piece and write a scene in the group selected using one line dialogue round robin activity.
