Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

I want my students to learn to discuss important topics and listen to others discuss.

I want my students to practice reading aloud and have comprehension.

I want my students to learn new words, their definitions, and their spellings.

I want my students to choose good books to read and write a short book report on the books they have chosen.

Classroom Activities

Each day we have Town Hall Meeting. We gather in a group, sometimes on the floor, and discuss life at Ivy Hawn, successes and failures, the new schedule, how to do well in school, etc.

Students designed their own portfolios to use to warehouse their writing, reading pieces, and tests. Each student will have his own folder to store his/her work.

Students chose books from our class library to read and write book reports.

Students practiced their oral reading pieces each day with me guiding them, helping them with difficult words, and defining words they did not know. They practiced reading aloud to each other so their oral reading assignment at home would go smoother.

I asked them to have parents sign each assignment.

Assignments Due

Monday’s homework: Write spelling words 10x each. Read the poem “Hands” out loud to a parent. Have your parent sign your homework.
