Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

I want my students to learn to discuss important topics and listen to others discuss.

I want my students to practice reading aloud and comprehend what they have read.

I want my students to learn new words, definitions, and spellings.

I want my students to discuss an author’s techniques in writing a novel, characterization, and the emotional impact of a story.

Classroom Activities

Each day we have Town Hall Meeting. We gather in a group, sometimes on the floor, and discuss life at Ivy Hawn, successes and failures, the new schedule, how to do well in school, etc.

Students practiced their oral reading pieces each day with me guiding them, helping them with difficult words, and defining words they did not know. They practiced reading aloud to each other so their oral reading assignment at home would go smoother.

I asked them to have parents sign each assignment.

This week we will begin using Think Cerca, a comprehensive reading program that is online.

Students will write a short writing piece about themselves, introducing themselves to me.

Assignments Due

Monday’s homework: Write one sentence with each of your 10 spelling words. Study the vocabulary definitions. Have your parent sign your homework. Read aloud, “The Boy Who Ate a Manatee” to your parent. Parents should sign homework pages.
