 – Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims. 
 – Analyze the interactions between individuals, events, and ideas in a text (e.g., how ideas influence individuals or events, or how individuals influence ideas or events.).
 – Analyze how two or more authors writing about the same topic shape their presentations of key information by emphasizing different evidence or advancing different interpretations of facts.
 – Explain the function of phrases and clauses in general and their function in specific sentences.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

 Students regularly encounter news stories in their daily lives.  This lesson explores the same news stories as covered in three different forms of media, offering a variety of perspectives and opinions.  By learning to analyze news stories in different media, students will become more savvy consumers of news.

 – Students will analyze and compare news stories about the same event from various sources.

Monday – Finish personal timeline. 
Tuesday & Wednesday – Read : Parents of Rescued Teenage Sailor Abby Sunderland Accused of Risking Her Life.
Media – Ship of Fools
TV News Interview – CBS – Was Abby Too Young to Sail?
Free reading. 
Thursday – Close Reader:  Big Things Come in Small Packages
Friday – Language Conventions:  Subordinate Clauses
Review Close Reader:  Finding Your Everest

Assignments Due

Monday, October 23 – Students must bring a novel to school.
Friday, October 27 – Personal timeline due.  Close Reader:  Pgs. 13-16.
