LAFS.7.W.1.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. LAFS.7.W.2.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
LAFS.7.W.3.9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
LAFS.7.W.3.7: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.
LAFS.7.W.2.6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and link to and cite sources as well as to interact and collaborate with others, including linking to and citing sources.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

In this unit students will learn techniques for great informational and explanatory writing, including how to organize their ideas, how to use effective transitions, and how to craft strong introductions and conclusions.
 – Students will read mentor texts and respond to prompts:  Problem & Solution and Cause & Effect.

Classroom Activities

Monday, January 14 – Students will read mentor texts on the Problem & Solution structure as well as Compare & Contrast.  Students will uncover the main idea, hook, thesis statement, transition words, and evaluate the conclusion.
Tuesday, January 15 – Students will learn how to construct an effective introduction and conclusion for an informative/explanatory essay.
Wednesday, January 16 – 1, 2, & 3 – iReady – 5, 6, & 7 – Novel Study
Thursday, January 17 & Friday, January 18 – Students will research an essay topic and outline the body paragraphs.  Students will write an effective introduction and conclusion.
