LAFS.7.W.3.9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
LAFS.7.W.3.7: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.
LAFS.7.W.2.6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and link to and cite sources as well as to interact and collaborate with others, including linking to and citing sources.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will write an explanatory essay on the Everglades National Park.  The essay will be the last VLT for the year.  

Performance Task: Writing Activity: Report 

Students are to use technology to present their information on Everglades National Park (PowerPoint, Prezi, Nearpod, Animoto, Seesaw, Digital Portfolios, etc.) Students may work in small groups or independently.

Learning Targets:
 – Students will provide an analysis of the interactions between individuals, events, and/or ideas in a text.
 – Students will provide an analysis of the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas.

Article:  “Trailblazing Surgeon Mary Walker Still One of a Kind”
Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919) was an American abolitionist, prisoner of war, and surgeon. She received the highest medal one can receive in the military, the Medal of Honor, for her role as a surgeon during the Civil War. In this informational text, Marylou Tousignant discusses Walker’s life, accomplishments, and beliefs.
