Week #21
Unit of InstructionFocus 6: Expressions
Standard(s) Taught

MAFS.6.EE.1.1

Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

MAFS.6.EE.1.2

Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.

  1. Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers.
  2. Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity.
  3. Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables.  Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems.  Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations).

MAFS.6.EE.1.3

Apply the properties of operations as strategies to generate equivalent expressions.

Review the following standards:

MAFS.4.OA.1.1 Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

MAFS.4.OA.1.2 Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students are successful when they can…

  • understand the meaning of exponents and exponential notation such as 32 = 3 x 3.
  • use appropriate terminology to explain how to evaluate an expression.
  • evaluate numerical expressions containing exponents.
  • discover that any base to the zero power is 1.
  • evaluate expressions for given values of variables using the order of operations when appropriate.
  • understand that the properties used with numbers also apply to expressions with variables.
  • apply the properties of operations with expressions involving variables to generate equivalent expressions.
