Classroom Activities

Students will learn about the author Maya Angelou through a BrainPop video.

Students will listen to an audio version of Life Doesn’t Frighten Me and compare it to the text.  Students will also view the poem in context of bullying and how it represents ideas around that theme.  

Students will use context clues to determine the meanings of words in the poem.

Students will identify key details in the poem.  

Students will identify rhyme scheme and repetition in the poem.

Students will answer written responses using the ACE strategy to analyze the text’s details.

Students will create their own poem in the style of Maya Angelou about their own fears.  

Students will take a comprehension quiz on the poem.  

Students will read ‘Fears and Phobias’ and ‘Wired for Fear’ as well as listen to audio version of the text and make comparisons of what they “hear” and “see” with what they read.  

Students will review how to write a summary.
