Learning Criteria

Students will:

  • Use text to draw inferences
  • Use context clues to determine meaning or words/phrases
  • Determine figurative & connotative meanings
  • Focus on how words/phrases function within a passage & analyze the impact of the word choice
  • Focus on words/phrases that are central to the meaning of the text
  • Differentiate between dictionary-based word meanings and the word functions within the context

  • Close read/discuss the poems “A Voice” by Pat Mora and “Words Like Freedom” by Langston Hughes
  • Vocabulary strategy: figurative and connotative word meanings

Assignments Due

Reading Log due Tuesday, September 18

  • Reading Logs due on Mondays. Students are to be reading a grade appropriate or higher, fiction or nonfiction, book/novel of their choice for 20-25 minutes nightly.  Students have received a reading log to summarize what they have read each night.  Parents must sign every week
  • NEW Enrichment vocabulary and spelling flash cards – our first vocabulary and spelling test is scheduled for Friday, September 21.
