Unit of InstructionProportionality, Ratios, and Rates
Standard(s) Taught

6.RP.1.2

Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

6.RP.1.3

Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
a. Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, finding missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
b. Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.
c. Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g. 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
d. Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.
e. Understand the concept of Pi as a ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

• define the term “unit rate” and demonstrate my understanding by giving various examples.
• recognize a ratio written as a unit rate, explain a unit rate, and give an example of a unit rate.
• describe the ratio relationship represented by a unit rate.
• convert a given ratio to a unit rate. • recognize that I can associate a ratio of two quantities, such as the ratio of miles per hour is 5:2, to another quantity called the rate.

• given a ratio, identify the associated rate, and identify the unit rate and the rate unit.

• given a rate, find ratios associated with the rate, where the second term is one and a ratio where both terms are whole numbers.

• recognize that all ratios associated to a given rate are equivalent because they have the same value.

Classroom Activities

We will be completing multiple activities to practice the above standards including structured notes, notebook activities and practice with MathSpace.

We will have a test on Monday 11-6-17 covering Unit Rates and Ratios

Assignments Due

Students were given an assignment on Monday 10-30-17 “Unit Rate Homework” On Mathspace, this is due on Monday 11-6-17.

We will have a test on Monday 11-6-17 covering Unit Rates and Ratios

Additional Resources

If additional help is needed, students are encouraged to view a lesson regarding a given topic on Khan Academy. This website is free and provides both video instruction as well as practice problems.

Students are able to complete additional practice on both Mathspace and IXL
