Unit of InstructionProportionality, Ratios, and Rates
Standard(s) Taught

Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
a. Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, finding missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
b. Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.
c. Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g. 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
d. Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.
e. Understand the concept of Pi as a ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

• model percents and write a percent as a fraction over 100 or a decimal to the hundredths place.
• calculate the percent of a given number by using visual representations (e.g., strip diagrams, percent bars, one-hundred grids)
• write a percent as a rate per one-hundred.
• find the whole when given both the part and the percent using tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, and tables of equivalent ratios.
• use a ratio as a conversion factor when working with measurements of different units.
• manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.

Classroom Activities

This week we will wrap up our ratio unit by completing our last standard. We will be doing notebook activities and other in class activities to help practice the above concepts.

Assignments Due

Due this Week: “Conversions of” On MathSpace Due 1-17-18

TEST FRIDAY 1-19-18 covering Percent of and Percent/Decimal/Fraction Conversion.

Upcoming: “Percent of” Homework (Mathspace) Due Tuesday 1-23-18 ( I have strongly suggested this assignment be completed before the test on Friday 1-19-18 as this material is on the test).

Project Due 1-26-18 See attached for Rubric.
