Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

 Students will provide a statement of a theme or central idea of a text. Students will provide a description of how the theme or central idea is conveyed through particular details.  Students will provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. (RL.1.2)

Students will provide an analysis of how a particular sentence, chapter, scene or stanza fits into the overall structure of a text. (RL.2.5)

Students will provide an explanation of how the author’s point of view or purpose is conveyed in the text. (RL.2.6)

 Learning Criteria

Students will:

  • Analyze the purpose of specific sentences, paragraphs, chapters, or sections on the overall structure and meaning. (RL.2.5)
  • Focus on how specific structural elements work together and/or help to develop ideas. (RL.2.5)
  • Determine the author’s point of view or purpose in a text & to explain the strategies the author uses to convey point of view/purpose. (RL.2.6)
  • Determine a central idea and how it is conveyed through particular details (RL.1.2)
Classroom Activities
  • Read & analyze the novel Iqbal by Francesco D’amo.
  • Analyze the text and the purpose of specific sentences, scenes, or stanzas and the effect on the overall structure & meaning
  • Close-read analyses for symbolism, metaphor, theme 
  • Determine the central idea and determine the details that support the text
  • Determine author’s POV and explain strategies used to convey POV or purpose
  • Vocabulary strategies for Iqbal

Assignments Due
  • Students should be working on their chosen book report at home. As soon as it is completed, PLEASE  bring it in and you can present it.  These reports are due Monday, December 10.  We will begin presentations at the beginning of class 12/10.
  •  Vocabulary work and reading comprehension questions throughout the novel study.
  • IXL X.5 & X.8 due 11/15
  • 45 minutes iReady due 11/15

Our novel study is the book Iqbal by Francesco D’Amo.  The students will be studying vocabulary, comprehension, and close-reading analysis while reading.  We will also have a literary assessment and project, as a culminating activity, with this novel.  Directions and rubrics for the project will be posted in the coming weeks.

The projects are due MONDAY 12/10 and we will begin presenting that day.  If you are done early, you may bring in the project and present it early.
