Standard(s) Taught

MAFS.912.N-RN.1.2  Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.

MAFS.912.A-REI.1.2  Solve simple rational and radical equations in one variable, and give examples showing how extraneous solutions may arise.

MAFS.912.N-RN.2.3  Explain why the sum or product of two rational numbers is rational; that the sum of a rational number and an irrational number is irrational; and that the product of a nonzero rational number and an irrational number is irrational.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria
  • apply properties of exponents to simplify algebraic expressions with integer and rational exponents.
  • evaluate and simplify expressions containing zero and integer exponents.

  • multiply monomials and apply multiplication properties of exponents to evaluate and simplify expressions.

  • rewrite equivalent expressions between radicals and rational exponents.

  • divide monomials by rationalizing denominators and apply properties of exponents to evaluate and simplify expressions.
    • recall rational and irrational numbers.

    • explain why the sum of two rational numbers is rational.

    • explain why the product of two rational numbers is rational.

    • explain why the sum of a rational and irrational number is irrational

    • explain why the product of a nonzero rational and irrational number is irrational.
