Subject Area8th Grade Math (Pre-Algebra)
Grade Level8th
Week #5
Unit of InstructionFocus 13: Volume
Standard(s) Taught

MAFS.8.G.3.9: Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

MAFS.7.G.2.6: Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume, and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

• describe the similarity between finding the volume of a cylinder and the volume of a right prism. (volume is A*h) • derive the formula to find the volume of a cylinder, a cone, and a sphere • Informally prove the relationship between the volume of a cylinder and the volume of a cone with the same base; and the volume of a sphere and the volume or a circumscribed cylinder. • use the formulas to find the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres. • solve real-world problems involving the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres

• determine the area of two-dimensional figures (triangles and quadrilaterals). • determine the surface area and volume of three-dimensional figures. • solve real-world problems involving area, surface area and volume. • solve problems involving a missing dimension of a geometric figure.

Classroom Activities

Monday:
Bellringer:
FSA Review Packet P.18 #1
Whole Group:
ISN – P.32.Volume of rectangular prisms P.33 Volume of cylinders
Small Groups:
Measuring activity – Students will measure their desks and a book to find the volume of both. Then, determine the number of books that could fit in the desk based on their calculations. Next, students will measure a cylinder cup holder and a marker to calculate the volume. They will determine how many markers will fit in the cup holder based on their volume calculations.
Independent:
Complete worksheet “Volume of Cylinders”
Khan Academy – Volume of cylinders (4 questions)

Wednesday:
Complete I-Ready assignments

Thursday:
Bellringer:
FSA Review Packet P.19 #4
Whole Group:
ISN – P.34.Volume of cones P.35 Volume of spheres
Small Groups:
Measuring activity – Students will measure a cone and a bowl to find the volume of each. Then, they will compare the volumes.
Independent:
Complete worksheet “Volume of Cones”
Khan Academy – Volume of cones (4 questions)

All IEP and ESOL accommodations provided daily.
