Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will learn about the composer Saint-Saens and his work.
Students will do a bingo assessment game to demonstrate they can listen and identify the pieces from “Carnival of the Animals.”
Students will learn a hand-clapping song game and perform rhythms using sticks.
Students will sing using their singing voices.
Students will be able to identify ties and slurs in a piece of music.
Students will begin their World Music Unit and learn a lullaby from South Africa.
Students will listen to the story of Abiyoyo from South Africa and perform the lullaby with instruments.
Students will create a composer board about one of the three composers we have discussed in class and present their project. (3rd Grade)

3rd Grade: Composer Board Project
– Student will choose from the three composers we have discussed in class and make a board filled with pictures, drawings, and facts about that composer
– Students will present their boards to the class

2nd Grade: “Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party”
– Students will read “Pete the Cat” together in class
– Students will perform on instruments to add accompaniment to the story and play in parts – listening, following directions, playing in parts

World Music
– Talk about South Africa and find it on a map
– Read the folk story of Abiyoyo and learn the lullaby
– Perform on instruments to accompany the song: rhythm, listening, playing in time, playing in parts

3rd Grade: Recorder
– Continue working on B,A,G,E,D
– Recorder karate songs and belts
