  • Add and subtract fractions with like denominators, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one, with procedural reliability.
  • Solve real-world problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one.
  • Decompose a fraction, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one, into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in multiple ways. Demonstrate each decomposition with objects, drawings and equations.
  • Extend previous understanding of multiplication to explore multiplication of a fraction by a whole number and a whole number by a fraction.

SCIENCE:  SC.4. P.11.1

  • Recognize that heat flows from a hot object to a cold object and that heat flow may cause materials to change temperature.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students will:

  • Write a fraction as a multiple of unit fractions.
  • Find the product of a whole number and a fraction.
  • Explain how to multiply a whole number and a mixed number.
  • Solve problems using fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Investigate and diagram the direction of heat flow (hot to cold).
  • Record observations of heat transfer (in the form of temperature changes) within tables, charts, and graphs.
  • Analyze and form conclusions based on their recorded observations and data.
