Teacher Stephanie Durrance Algebra 1 Honors 7th/8th 5 UNIT 8: Quadratic Equations and Functions Part I
Standard(s) Taught

MAFS.912.A-SSE.2.3a.b: Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression. a. Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeroes of the function it defines. b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it defines.

MAFS.912.A-REI.2.4: Solve quadratic equations in one variable.
a. Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation. b. Solve quadratic equations using quadratic formula.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

• find the zeros of quadratic expressions and functions. • identify and factor perfect-square trinomials and difference of squares. • use pictures, algebra tiles, and/or symbols to explain the concept underlying completing the square. • complete the square to rewrite a quadratic expression.

• solve quadratic equations by inspection, finding square roots, completing the square, quadratic formula, and factoring. • explain why taking the square root of both sides when solving a quadratic equation will yield two solutions. • use pictures, algebra tiles, and/or symbols to explain the concept underlying completing the square. • derive the quadratic formula by completing the square.
