Over the next couple weeks, our class will be working on creating a classroom newspaper.
We will first be examining and discussing newspapers and their purposes, genres, and characteristics. From there we will be creating articles step by step.
Monday, May 24th – iReady Growth Check in Reading
May 25 – 28
Students will be working in groups to create a newspaper. Each student is responsible for 3 sections of the newspaper. (Minimum)
Papers will contain the following:
Students should have submitted their science fiction paper and book report. Group papers will be worked on in class and due by June 1.
Ad- A message printed in the newspaper in space paid for by the
Article-A piece of writing included with others in a newspaper, magazine,
Beat- Daily route covered by a reporter to keep in touch with sources.
Byline – The line under the headline that tells the name of the writer.
Caption- The lines under a photo that explain what the picture is about.
Column- The up and down (vertical) divisions of a page written by a regular
Deadline – The assigned time for something to be submitted in order to
Editorial- An article where the editor or publisher offer their opinions on
Feature- A story that is not a hard news story and is usually longer than a
Flag- A statement printed in all issues of a newspaper, usually on the
Hard News- Up to the minute news and evets that are reported right away.
Headline – Title written in extra large font across the top of the front page.
Hook- An interesting angle early in the story that draws the reader in.
Lead- The first paragraph of a story, usually telling the 5 Ws (who, what,
Publisher- Administrator head of a newspaper.
Reporter- A person hired to rush to the scene and give back information as
Scoop- Getting the exclusive story before anyone else
