Standard(s) Taught

MAFS.7.NS.1.1
Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
b.
Understand p + q as the number located a distance q from p, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing realworld contexts.
c.
Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, p – q = p + (q). Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this principle in realworld contexts.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students are successful when they can…
b.
define additive inverse as a rational number added to its negative which results in a sum of zero.
define the direction of the distance on a number line based on the sign of the addend. Negative
is left/down and positive is right/up.
define the sum of two rational numbers as the distance one addend is away from the total by the
absolute value of the other addend. Example: 4 + 3 = 7
solve real world problems involving adding rational numbers
c.
calculate the distance between two rational numbers by finding the absolute value of
their difference.
 compare subtracting rational numbers to adding the additive inverse. Example: 4 – (3) = 4 + 3
prove that the distance between two rational numbers is equal to the absolute value of their
difference. Example: the distance between 4 and 1 on a number line equals 4 – (1) = 3
solve real world problems describing involving subtracting rational numbers. Example: How many degrees cooler is 4?
