MAFS.7.NS.1.1

Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.

b.

Understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.

c.

Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, p – q = p + (-q). Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this principle in real-world contexts.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Students are successful when they can…

b.

  • define additive inverse as a rational number added to its negative which results in a sum of zero.
  • define the direction of the distance on a number line based on the sign of the addend. Negative
is left/down and positive is right/up.
  •  define the sum of two rational numbers as the distance one addend is away from the total by the
    absolute value of the other addend.  Example: -4 + -3 = -7
  • solve real world problems involving adding rational numbers

c.

  • calculate the distance between two rational numbers by finding the absolute value of
    their difference.
  • compare subtracting rational numbers to adding the additive inverse. Example: -4 – (-3) = -4 + 3
  • prove that the distance between two rational numbers is equal to the absolute value of their
    difference. Example: the distance between -4 and -1 on a number line equals |-4 – (-1)| = 3
  • solve real world problems describing involving subtracting rational numbers. Example: How many degrees cooler is -4?
