Vocabulary

  1. life vest – a man-made flotation device
  2. writhing – twisting and squirming
  3. cypress knees – the cone-shaped growths on the base of a bald cypress.
  4. silhouette – the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background, especially in dim light
  5. sheltered – protected or shielded from something harmful, especially bad weather
  6. shivering – continued shaking of the body
  7. lantern – a lamp with a transparent case protecting the flame or electric bulb, and typically having a handle by which it can be carried or hung
  8. gratitude – thankfulness and appreciation
  9. exhausted – extremely tired
  10. wailing siren –  If something such as a siren or an alarm wails, it makes a long, loud, high-pitched sound
  11. blaze of light – a brilliant flash of light
  12. cut the circulation off – to impair blood flow
