Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

Monday – Students will give 2-minute oral book reports. Others will listen attentively. We will read our class novel. Students should watch the two videos on their own time and take notes. We will go over this week’s Vocabulary in preparation for a vocabulary test on Friday.

wheelwright – a carpenter who specializes in making or fixing wheels

jerky – dried, marinated meat strips that last a long time

marinate – to soak in salt water, spices, or sauces

yellow fever – a sometimes fatal disease carried by mosquitoes. Yellow Fever affected the liver, so patients usually turned yellow from liver bile.

old maid – an insensitive way to refer to a woman who has not married by the time she is 25.

hammock – a long, strong cloth gathered on either end and strung between big trees or under the wagon, hammocks were used for sleeping and keeping people from being down on the ground.

pallet – a make-shift bed down on the floor or ground made of quilts and blankets to give it some softness

whoop-de-doo – an evening of dancing, singing, happiness, and food

field hospital – a make-shift outdoor hospital

orphanage – a school-like place for kids who have no parents to live

Tuesday – Left-over oral book reports. We will read our class novel. Students will read/do pp. 48-51 in their Ready Florida books.

Wednesday – Morning: Independent reading Afternoon: Read class novel, discuss.

Thursday – Read class novel. Students will work on Edgenuity for 45 minutes.

Friday – Vocabulary Test, read class novel, Kahoot
