MAFS.6.SP.2.5

Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context, such as by:
a. reporting the number of observations.
b. describing the nature of the attribute under investigation, including how it was measured and its units of measurement.
c. giving quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered.
d. relating the choice of measures of center and variability to the shape of the data distribution and the context in which the data were gathered.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

• understand that the mean is a balance point by calculating the distances of the data points from the mean and call the distances, deviations.
• understand that the mean is the value such that the sum of the deviations is equal to zero.
• write a data collection summary (5 number summary) that includes the number of observations, what is being investigated, how it is measured, and the units of measurement.
• justify the use of a particular measure of center or measure of variability based on the shape of the data.
• use a measure of center and a measure of variation to draw inferences about the shape of the data distribution.
• describe overall patterns and any deviations in the data and how they relate to the context of the problem.

Classroom Activities

In class, we complete the MATH workshop each period. This is a blended, rotation model of teaching where your student is receiving the standards in multiple different settings while completing many different activities. This allows me to have time with your students in a very small group setting to help when necessary further develop the understanding of the standards.

DIA #3 will be Thursday 12/13/18

Assignments Due

The week students will be assigned the following on IXL to practice class concepts:

IXL: (Monday/Wednesday/Thursday) 6th Grade GG3, GG11

Mathspace: Mathspace Box and Whisker due Monday 12-10-18

If additional help is needed, students are encouraged to view a lesson regarding a given topic on Khan Academy. This website is free and provides both video instruction as well as practice problems.

Students are able to complete additional practice on both Mathspace and IXL
